History in the Making

The last time a double digit number graced Fordham’s record was when they went 1-10 my sophomore year. I remember standing on the sidelines witnessing loss after loss. If you told me that I would be cheering for an undefeated team my senior year, I would have told you I thought you were crazy. But just yesterday I stood on the sideline of Jack Coffey field for the very last time, watching the Rams win their 10th game of the season, becoming one of the last teams in the FCS to remain undefeated.

Screen Shot 2013-11-10 at 8.40.58 PMCoach Joe Moorhead leads the Rams to this historic season in only his second year coaching. Talk about a quick turn-around! He entered as coach the year after that sad season with only one win, coaching the Rams to six wins last year. Just one year later, Fordham is having its best season since 1930 with its highest national ranking ever at 7. This is no small accomplishment with a history marked by the legendary Vince Lombardi.

Moorhead said that he and his coaching staff came in determined to lay a foundation of discipline and attention to detail, focusing on the little things both on and off the field.

“Football wise, our goal is to a perennial Patriot League champion, competing for a National Championship on a yearly basis,” said Moorhead in an interview with Fordham alum, Jack Curry. “I think for us to be able to achieve our highest ranking in the school’s history and accomplish a bunch of firsts from a program standpoint is a testimony to our coaching staff and the support we receive from our university community.”

From a sideline perspective, this season has been amazing. It has been an unbelievable experience to cheer for such an explosive team. I can also thank Fordham Football for my tremendous arm strength, seeing as we do pushups for each point score, totaling to over 1,000 in the season. What a difference compared to a mere 50 my sophomore year.

The Rams have to beat Lafayette and Colgate to complete a perfect season. While they can’t win the Patriot League because they started giving scholarships, Fordham hopes to make a statement in the FCS playoffs. All I can say is that I’m proud to be a Ram!
